Finding inspiration...

Finding inspiration...

People sometimes ask me... "What drives you to get up in the morning? Why bother with the hassle of running your own PR consultancy, particularly in the current economic climate?"

Of course, everyone is different but what motivates me is a real desire to make a difference for clients and their businesses and to feel I am doing the very best work I can. And, taking that point forward, I am always looking for new ways of approaching old problems, better ways of delivering results. If nothing else it keeps life interesting!

At the end of the day, I don't always get it right - no-one can. But I am always trying and don't feel I need permission to pick myself up and try something different.

I read on Twitter the other day that "You shouldn't ask God to guide you if you are not prepared to pick up your feet." And that struck a chord with me. So many people seem to feel that other people are the reason for their success or failure - for them achieving their dreams or feeling that they can't. Some people seem to feel that they need to ask permission to take part in their own life.

My view is different. In my experience the people you meet who achieve their dreams are the ones who give it a try. I remember reading a book by sailor and adventurer, Pete Goss, a few years ago and in that he said "The cancer of time is complacency - if you want to do something, do it now. Tomorrow maybe too late."

And that sums it up perfectly for me. None of us can know what is around the corner and I believe that we should all be open to opportunities that arise and be prepared to take responsibility for having a go. And this applies equally whether it is work or play.

After all, better to have tried and failed than never to have tried.

There's a lesson in there somewhere - don't sit dreaming about what might be, start putting plans in place to get there. And do it now. Tomorrow might be too late.
