Feeling sad?

Feeling sad?

I think I'm SAD. Suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder that is, not sad, sad.

I have never longed so much for the sun to wake me up through the gaps in the curtains, or to go for a walk after dinner with the sun only just beginning to set.

I don't ever remember a winter dragging on as long as this before and affecting my mood in quite the same way. Is anyone else feeling constantly tired? Even after eight or nine hours sleep my alarm goes off, it's pitch black, and all I want to do is hit snooze and roll over.

So in true self-diagnosis (some would say hypochondriac) style, I am turning to Doctor Wikipedia to find out more and check my symptoms.

Basically SAD is a mood disorder that brings on depressive symptoms in winter, even if you are as happy as Larry the rest of the year.

So what are the symptoms?

Difficulty waking up in the morning - check
Tendency to oversleep as well as to overeat - check, check
Craving for carbohydrates - check

This isn't looking good…

Lack of energy - check
Withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities - OK after another hectic weekend I know I haven't got that one, phew!

"All of this leads to the depressed, pessimistic feelings of hopelessness, and lack of pleasure which characterize a person suffering from this disorder".

OK I'm not quite that bad. Maybe I just like vitamin D, barbeques and beer gardens. Perhaps I simply prefer seeing cows in the fields and thoughts of summer holidays.

Does that make me sad?
